Greg Gumbel Died of Cancer.

CBS Sports anchor and commentator Greg Gumbel died of cancer at the age of 78, his family confirmed on Dec. 27, of 2024, according to a report from CBS News.

Gumbel, who marked 50 years in broadcasting in 2022, was a play-by-play announcer and studio host for CBS Sports as well as for NBC Sports and other outlets, hosting coverage of Super Bowls, Olympic Games and more, according to CBS News.

Additionally, Gumbel was a member of the Board of Trustees and the National Board of Advisors for the March of Dimes, as well as spent 16 years as a member of the Sports Council for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

“Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity,” Gumbel’s wife Marcy, and daughter, Michelle, said in a statement. “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten.

“Greg’s memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him.”

Tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski competed while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski, a former U.S. Open women’s doubles champion, announced that she played throughout last year while undergoing treatment for breast cancer, at one point even delaying treatment in order to compete at Wimbledon and at the Olympics, according to a report from the Associated Press.

“I know this will come as a shock to many, but I am OK, and I will be OK. Early detection saves lives” Dabrowski, 32, posted on Instagram on Dec. 31, of 2024.

Dabrowski said in the post that she felt a lump in her left breast during a self-examination in the spring of 2023 before eventually receiving her diagnosis in April of 2024.

“Fast forward through two surgeries at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, recovery, rehab, … a slight delay in further treatment to be able to compete at Wimbledon and the Olympics, radiation and fatigue [between Toronto and U.S. Open], starting endocrine therapy, ending the season on the highest note possible … it all seems surreal,” Dabrowski wrote in the post.

According to the Associated Press’ report Dabrowski, ranked third in women’s doubles, did not play in April and May due to surgery and returned to the sport in June. At Wimbledon in July, Dabrowski, who is Canadian, and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand lost the final to Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend. At the ParisOlympics, she won the bronze medal in mixed doubles with Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Linda Lavin Died of Complications from Lung Cancer.

Actress Linda Lavin, a Tony winner who starred as waitress Alice Hyatt on the sitcom “Alice,” died of complications from lung cancer on Dec. 29 at the age of 87, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lavin earned one Emmy nomination and two Golden Globes during her nine seasons as the star of “Alice,” which aired from 1976 to 1985. On Broadway, Lavin was nominated for six Tony awards, winning for her work in “Broadway Bound” in 1987.

The Hollywood Reporter described Lavin as a tireless advocate for women’s rights, noting that she marched in support of the Equal Rights Amendment and was invited to join the National Commission on Working Women.
