Dwyane Wade, NBA Hall of Fame Star, Discusses Kidney Tumor Removal

On Jan. 30th, in the latest episode of his podcast, “The Why with Dwyane Wade”, NBA Hall of Fame basketball superstar, Dwyane Wade, revealed that he had 40% of his kidney removed after doctors located a cancerous tumor, according to a report from “People”.

In an exclusive podcast episode shared with “People”, Wade avoided going to his doctor to get a physical for years. This was then followed by what he described as a “shocking” diagnosis.

Motivated by his father’s own experience with prostate cancer, Wade shared his initial concerns, questioning, “On the process of checking, like, why is my [pee] coming out slow, why is my stream [not] powerful? Why is it a little weak?”

His doctor then put Wade through a full-body scan which revealed that there was a cyst/tumor on one of his kidneys, according to “People”.

After multiple doctors agreed with the diagnosis, Wade decided to undergo surgery on Dec. 18th, 2023.

According to the National Cancer Institute, kidney cancer forms in kidney tissues. Types of kidney cancer include renal cell carcinoma (RCC), transitional cell cancer of the renal pelvis and Wilms tumor, though RCC is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults.
