Cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and medical experts to share experiences at the Ruesch Center for the Cure of Gastrointestinal Cancers 2015 Symposium.
PLAINSBORO, N.J. (November 24, 2015) — Cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, family members and medical experts will gather to share their knowledge and experiences at a live taping of the next CURE Connections® video series on Saturday, Dec. 5, during the Ruesch Center for the Cure of Gastrointestinal Cancers 2015 Symposium at Georgetown University Hotel & Conference Center in Washington, D.C.
CURE Connections, a video platform designed specifically for patients with cancer, offers a highly insightful series of videos focused on the cancer journey. Past video topics include being diagnosed with cancer and talking to your doctor about the diagnosis. To receive additional information, stories and advice along your cancer journey, visit www.curetoday.com and subscribe to receive updates.
The Ruesch Center and video series producer CURE Media Group encourage patients, caregivers and family members to attend the patient symposium and be part of the live audience during a general panel discussion as well as breakout sessions covering pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer and nutrition for cancer patients. Additional education presentations taking place at the patient symposium include sessions on liver cancer, stomach cancer, upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancer, stress reduction, talking with friends and family, relationships and sexuality and measuring value and outcomes.
“We invite you to come talk with us and learn more about these diseases, share tips with other patients going through the same thing and learn about new science in a language you can understand,” said Dr. John Marshall, director, The Ruesch Center for the Cure of GI Cancers, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Marshall will join two cancer patients and a patient advocate for the general panel discussion on Saturday morning. He will also join patient advocate Freda Omaswa and Dr. G. Emmett Lynskey, assistant professor, Division of Vascular & Interventional Radiology, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, for the colorectal cancer breakout session.
“The disease-specific breakout sessions will really go into greater depth about what it means to be a patient with that specific type of cancer, and the whole symposium is designed to give patients opportunities for one-on-one interactions with medical experts,” said Dr. Michael Pishvaian from the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Pishvaian will be part of the pancreatic cancer breakout session at the patient symposium.
Registration for the patient symposium is free for patients, caregivers, family members and the news media. Sign up at http://www.curetoday.com/ruesch-center-symposium to have the registration fee waived. For more information, watch the video overview.
For those who cannot attend, the taped sessions will be edited and made available worldwide in the near future on the CURE Connections website.
The patient symposium is part of the larger three-day 2015 symposium, “Fighting a Smarter War Against Cancer,” with the other two days devoted to content for physicians. The patient symposium begins Thursday, Dec. 3, with a policy briefing and a session on advances in GI cancer. Friday sessions address young-adult colorectal cancer and measuring value and outcomes in cancer care. CURE Media Group will film portions of the proceedings and make them available to physicians on OncLive.
