Mesothelioma Awareness Day on September 26 symbolizes hope: a time when we come together to shine a light on a rare and devastating cancer! The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation instituted it in 2004. Congress first declared September 26 as National Mesothelioma Awareness Day in 2010. As a 17-year-and-counting peritoneal mesothelioma survivor myself, I know firsthand the importance of raising awareness and supporting those who are facing this disease.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer primarily caused by exposure to asbestos, according to the American Cancer Society. It's estimated that 2,500 to 3,000 people in the United States die annually from mesothelioma. Increasing awareness about mesothelioma helps raise funds for research and improves clinical trial participation, which is low compared to more familiar cancers like breast and prostate cancers.

Here are three impactful ways to participate in Mesothelioma Awareness Day and make a difference.

1. Educate Yourself and Others: Knowledge is Power

One of the most powerful things you can do is to educate yourself about mesothelioma. Understanding this cancer's causes, symptoms and treatments can equip you with valuable knowledge and enable you to share accurate information with others. By hosting a small gathering or organizing a virtual meeting to discuss your learning, you are not just spreading knowledge but also dispelling myths. Share articles, personal stories and resources on your social media platforms. By sharing personal stories, you can help others connect and empathize with those silently struggling.

2. Participate in Fundraising Events: Every Contribution Counts

Many organizations host fundraising events specifically for Mesothelioma Awareness Day. These events range from charity runs and walks to online fundraisers and auctions. Participate in a local event or create your fundraiser. Every dollar raised can contribute to research, patient support and advocacy efforts. Your contributions can offer that same sense of hope and support to others.

3. Show Support Through Social Media: Amplify the Message

Social media is a powerful tool that can amplify our voices far and wide. On Mesothelioma Awareness Day, join the conversation using hashtags like #MesotheliomaAwarenessDay and #EndMesothelioma. Share stories of warriors who have battled this disease, post infographics with facts about mesothelioma, or express your support for the cause. Your posts can inspire others to learn more and act. Let your voice be a beacon of hope and resilience, just as I strive to be through my journey.

Here are some organizations and events that are dedicated to mesothelioma awareness and support:

  • Asbestos.com (The Mesothelioma Center) — This hub is a valuable resource, offering a wealth of information and support for individuals facing mesothelioma and their family members. Whether it's educational materials, support groups or practical assistance, this organization provides comprehensive help and guidance to patients with mesothelioma.
  • The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation — This nonprofit organization supports patients, caregivers and families affected by mesothelioma. It also funds research and advocates for mesothelioma patients.
  • Miles for Meso — Miles for Meso organizes races and events all over the US to raise awareness and funds for mesothelioma research. These events feature 5K races, fun runs and walks, and everyone is welcome to join, regardless of age or ability.
  • The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization — The ADAO is dedicated to preventing asbestos exposure and eliminating related diseases, including mesothelioma. It supports patients and their families while also advocating for a global asbestos ban.

Participating in Mesothelioma Awareness Day is more than just an act of solidarity; it's a commitment to fostering a community of support and hope. You can make a significant impact by educating yourself and others, contributing financially, and using your voice on social media. Together, we can light the way for those affected by mesothelioma and move closer to a world where no one must face this battle alone!
