 Since 2013, this award program has recognized the people and organizations that have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of people with myeloproliferative neoplasms, or MPNs. The program focuses on the three "classical" MPNs—or what are known as Philadelphia chromosome–negative MPNs.
 
 
 Created in the spirit of fostering community, the MPN Heroes Recognition Program recognizes patients, Healthcare Professionals, caregivers, advocates, and organizations that bring understanding, compassion, and strength to the MPN community.
 
 
 The MPN Heroes Recognition Program, is sponsored by CURE magazine and Incyte Corporation. The goal of the program is to create as many opportunities as possible for people with MPNs to be heard and to be supported, so more solutions and treatment options will emerge.

<Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles “Chip” Esten was raised in Alexandria, VA and attended T.C. Williams High School (made famous in the film “Remember the Titans.”) He then attended The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, where he graduated with a degree in economics and met his eventual wife, Patty. While in Williamsburg, he was lead singer/songwriter in a popular local band.
 
 
 Esten made his theatrical debut in London when he portrayed Buddy Holly, singing, acting and playing guitar in the hit West End musical “Buddy.” In that role he was honored to perform for H.R.M Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and eventually President and Mrs. George H.W. Bush at The White House. He was also very honored to perform with Jerry Allison and Joe B. Mauldin, Buddy’s original hitmaking bandmates, the Crickets.
 
 
 It was during his run as Buddy that Esten first appeared on the original British version of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” with Ryan Stiles and Greg Proops. When “Whose Line” came to ABC, he became a recurring cast member and frequent song improvisor. Since then he has appeared on Drew Carey’s Improvaganza and toured frequently, performing live improv shows with Stiles, Proops and Jeff B. Davis.
 
 
 Esten’s many additional television credits include recurring roles on “Big Love,” “Enlightened,” “The Office” and “ER.” Besides being the father on Disney Channel’s “Jessie,” he has been a Klingon on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” a secretary on “Murphy Brown” and Kelly Bundy’s fiance on the series finale of “Married with Children.” His film credits include “Swing Vote,” “Thirteen Days,” “61*” and “The Postman.”
 
 
 While on "Nashville”, Esten has been honored to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and the historic Ryman auditorium. He was also honored to officially "flip the switch" at the 2013 Graceland Christmas Lighting ceremony. Many of the songs he has performed as Deacon (Undermine, Sideshow, Playin' Tricks, etc..) are available on the three very successful "Nashville" soundtracks that have been released to date.
 
 
 Over a decade ago, Esten’s life was turned upside down when his then 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Addie, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer that affects the body's white blood cells. The disease, which is generally highly treatable in children, was detected after Esten and his wife, Patty brought Addie to the pediatrician for a small rash of red spots. Addie underwent weekly spinal taps and a grueling two-year course of chemotherapy. She also participated in several clinical trials, which rendered her unable to walk for six months and forced her into intensive care. With his daughter now 14 and in remission Esten and his family have dedicated themselves to helping other families of sick children with blood cancers.

<Neonatologist, Simulation Educator, and co-star of TLC's The Little Couple with Bill Klein Diagnosis/Treatment: Arnold was diagnosed with stage 3 choriocarcinoma, which occurs in the uterus (Gestational trophoblastic neoplasm), due to a non-viable pregnancy she had suffered in September 2013. After undergoing chemotherapy, Arnold is cancer free for 15 months (May 2015).
 
 
 Jen stars in The Little Couple – an American reality television series on TLC that debuted May 26, 2009. The series features Bill Klein and Jennifer Arnold, who both have dwarfism. Jen is 96.5 cm (3'2") and Bill 122 cm (4 feet) tall.
 
 
 Jennifer Arnold and Bill Klein have inspired millions as stars of TLC’s hit show The Little Couple. Though they both have dwarfism, they have knocked down every obstacle they have encountered together with a positive, can-do attitude. The show has featured the lives of Jennifer (a respected neonatologist) and Bill (a successful entrepreneur) from their marriage in 2009, to the launch of their pet shop, to the adoption of their children, to Jen’s overcoming cancer.
 
 
 In December 2013, Jen revealed that she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, stage 4 choriocarcinoma, due to a non-viable pregnancy she had suffered in September 2013. She allowed the cameras to document her struggle. Her case was particularly challenging facing a rare form of cancer as a little person, where correct diagnosis, dosing and timing were critical during her chemotherapy.
 
 
 Jen is advocate for health and wellness and rising above adversity. She welcomes the opportunity to provide insight and hope to cancer patients. In May 2015 she released a book, “Life is Short: No Pun Intended.” She has 249,000 Twitter followers and millions of fans of the show.

Dr. Jennifer Arnold

Siddhartha Mukherjee’s accomplishments as both a physician and author are compelling and powerful. Winning a Pulitzer Prize for his book, Emperor of All Maladies, Dr. Mukherjee’s newest book is The Gene: An Intimate History, #1 New York Times. Dr. Mukherjee’s new book The Gene: An Intimate History, debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list. It is a magnificent history of the gene and a response to the defining question of the future: What becomes of being human when we learn to “read” and “write” our own genetic information? A cancer specialist, Sid has devoted his life to caring for victims of cancer, a disease that sickens and kills millions of people around the world each year. As a researcher, his laboratory is on the forefront of discovering new cancer drugs using innovative biological methods. Dr. Mukherjee is equally devoted to and effective in communicating the “story” of cancer through his writings. In his engrossing book, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, Dr. Mukherjee gives readers a fascinating look into the origins and causes of cancer, its deadly effect on the human body, how it has virtually enveloped modern civilization, and the epic battles that are taking place to control, cure, and conquer it. As he notes, the disease now touches in some way the lives of every man, woman and child in the world, while scientists and physicians work tirelessly to bring new treatments and hope to its victims. Dr. Mukherjee has been published in Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Neuron, Journal of Clinical Investigation, The New York Times, and The New Republic. His work was nominated for inclusion in Best American Science Writing, 2000.Sid is an accomplished speaker. His words both on the stage and on the page are powerful, illuminating, and inspiring.

Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD, PhD

Dr. Jill Biden is a mother and grandmother, a lifelong educator, and was Second Lady of the United States from 2009 - 2017.
 
 
 Dr. Biden’s passion for the fight against cancer began in 1993, when four of her friends were diagnosed with breast cancer. Hoping to use her decades-long education background to promote prevention, she started the Biden Breast Health Initiative in Delaware, which has educated more than 10,000 high school girls about the importance of early detection of breast cancer.
 
 
 Later, after losing both parents to cancer, and helping to nurse her sister through a stem cell transplant, she was inspired to use her role as Second Lady to raise awareness and support research. In Washington, D.C., Dr. Biden and the Vice President served – and continue to serve – as the Honorary Co-Chairs for the Global Race for the Cure.
 
 
 Following the death of their son Beau to brain cancer in 2015, Vice President and Dr. Biden helped push for a national commitment to ending cancer, known as the White House Cancer Moonshot. Today, they continue that mission through the Biden Cancer Initiative, with the goal to inject a sense of urgency into cancer research and care, and to deliver better outcomes for patients. The Biden Cancer Initiative is guided by a Board of Directors, co-chaired by Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, which includes world-renowned leaders and experts in the fields of medical research, patient care, information technology, finance, management, patient engagement, patient experience, and public policy. The Initiative’s vision is to be a major convening force in driving new actions and collaborations toward ending cancer as we know it.
 
 
 In addition to her work in the area of cancer, Dr. Biden works as a full-time English professor at Northern Virginia Community College – a position she held throughout her time in the White House. She also co-chairs the America College Promise National Advisory Board – leading the effort to make community colleges free for responsible students – and serves as the Board Chair of Save the Children US.
 
 
 With the conclusion of the Obama-Biden Administration, Dr. Biden and the Vice President launched the Biden Foundation in 2017, to continue their work to strengthen the middle class, protect women and children against violence, advocate for community colleges, and support military families..
