To detect skin cancer, which is very treatable and curable if found early, self-exams are recommended in addition to visiting a dermatologist for annual skin exams. To conduct a self-exam, individuals should examine their face, scalp, hands, arms, torso, upper back, lower back and legs.
Individuals should see a dermatologist if they see something new, changing or unusual evaluating asymmetry, borders, color, diameter and evolvement and can include a growth, mole, birthmark, brown spot or open sores.
If something is suspicious, a biopsy may be performed.
