Running to Raise Money and Awareness for Cancer

Extraordinary Healer® Award finalist Angela Hammack, B.S.N., RN, OCN, discussed how she began running marathons to raise awareness – and $100,000 – for cancer.

For Angela Hammack, B.S.N., RN, OCN, what started as a desire to get in shape turned into an endeavor that raised nearly $100,000 for various cancer research organizations.

An oncology nurse with a passion for running and raising money to help patients, Hammack says when she found out about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society race training program, she thought, “What better way than to take this and use it to benefit someone else?”

“The more that we can get out and talk about oncology and cancer and the needs of our patients, whether it be financial, whether it be supportive, whether it be organizations offering support to them, then we need to do that advocacy work,” said Hammack. “Whatever we can do to be a voice to talk about what’s going on, share our stories to bring awareness, promote advocacy and get other people involved, that’s what we need to do. It comes back and benefits everybody.”
