Jimmy Buffett Dies of Cancer at 76

“Margaritaville” singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett died of cancer on Saturday, according to a report from TMZ.

Buffett, 76, received a diagnosis of skin cancer four years ago, which was followed by lymphoma, according to the outlet, which reported that Buffett began receiving hospice care last Monday.

Earlier this year, Buffett was forced to cancel a number of concerts due to illness, the Associated Press reported.

Buffett, known for his breezy music and attitude, parlayed his musical fame into a business empire that included restaurants, resorts, a cruise line, merchandise, a stage musical and signature alcoholic beverages, with Forbes estimating his net worth at $1 billion.

A two-time Grammy nominee, Buffett is survived by his wife, Jane, as well as his daughters Savannah and Sarah and his son Cameron, the Associated Press reported.

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by family, music, friends and dogs,” read a statement posted to his official website. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

“A poet of paradise, Jimmy Buffett was an American music icon who inspired generations to step back and find the joy in life and in one another,” said President Joe Biden in a statement.

“Your music brought joy to so many people, including me,” Beach Boys singer Mike Love posted on X. “It was always a pleasure when our paths crossed and we were able to share the stage together. … Your sense of humor and gracious nature was a pleasure to be around. Although we’ll miss you, we’ll continue to enjoy the beautiful music that you’ve blessed upon us. No more shoes, just your toes in heaven’s sand.”

“His music was more than just the lifestyle — it was emotional and iconic,” actor and filmmaker Ben Stiller posted on X. “Made the world a better place and always will. Sending love to his family.”

“Jimmy, you lived life and didn’t let life live you,” posted rapper Pitbull on his social media accounts alongside a video clip of himself and Buffett on stage together. “A true pioneer and trailblazer. Thank God for @jimmybuffett and when life gives you limes, make margaritas.”

Buffett was planning to release a new album later this year, according to an August post on his website.
