Skin cancer, the most common type of cancer, results in more diagnoses each year compared with all other cancers combined, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
The disease often develops on skin that is exposed to the sun; however, it can also occur in other areas not exposed. The risk for skin cancer can be reduced by limiting exposure or avoiding ultraviolet radiation.
Risk factors for skin cancer include indoor tanning, sunburns, skin type, unprotected exposure to UVA and UVB rays, genetics, atypical moles, organ transplant, frequent skin contact with certain chemicals and having red hair.
