In 2016, I was diagnosed with a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN). MPNs are a chronic, slow progressive, incurable blood cancer. There are different types of MPNs: myelofibrosis (MF), polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythemia (ET), which is what I battle. We all have our unique journey with MPNs, and they affect everyone differently. ET is associated with a proliferation of platelet precursors in the bone marrow and complications frequently include blood clotting and/or bleeding. I am currently undergoing treatment to help manage my MPN. It, however, is not a cure and because is it considered rare, more research in the MPN world is needed. There are many different mutations and prognoses, and symptoms vary from person to person. Personally, my two major symptoms have been chronic fatigue and shortness of breath, which affects my concentration, memory, recovery time and overall mood. The body is put in a chronic state of stress and affects the major organs. Some patients with MPNs can progress to more sinister forms. I am grateful that I’m not currently fighting for my life and would like to keep it that way and move forward with as much grace as I can.
To help drive awareness and raise funds I will be embarking on a hike in August. I will be taking on the challenge of trekking through the beautiful Waterton Lakes National Park with Sole 2 Soul for MPN. Sole 2 Soul for MPN is a collaboration between the Canadian MPN Research Foundation, the MPN Research Foundation and CURE Media Group. They are dedicated to supporting and uplifting the MPN community in both Canada and the USA. They have been a big part of my blood cancer journey and have provided much needed support. The MPN world is constantly evolving with new research, and new and improved treatments are arising.
My goal for this hike is to spread awareness of this rare disease and to raise funds for MPN research in Canada. I’d like to be able to give back and, in turn, hopefully help improve the quality of life of other fellow patients with blood cancer. By supporting me in this hike, you can be a part of supporting improvements and the quality of life of patients with MPNs as well – and eventually finding a cure for this disease. Help me empower those impacted by MPN blood cancers and reach my goal. Any donation to support this amazing cause makes a huge difference and impact on patients with MPNs like myself.
