Dr. Jaroslav Prchal is an oncologist/hematologist at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal, Canada, and an associate professor of oncology and medicine at McGill University in Montreal, with a clinical interest in polycythemia and myeloproliferative disorders. He is the medical director of the Cancer Care Program at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Dr. Prchal was born in Czechoslovakia and in 1964 received his Doctorate in Medicine from the Charles University in Prague. Perhaps his commitment to the field has been influenced by his family – his father was a surgeon and several of his family members are also members of the medical profession.
Since that time, he has been hard at work in research and medicine, with a focus on myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Among his many achievements in providing care and advancement to the MPN community, he co-founded the MPN Clinic in the Segal Cancer Centre at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital and has acted as clinical lead of the Rossy Cancer Network, with a focus on developing focused tumor boards to improve patient care and outcomes. He has said that he believes every patient with cancer should be presented at tumor boards and have their cancer management plan determined prior to treatment.
Dr. Prchal is an enthusiastic hiker and it is reported he has climbed Mount Washington over 100 times. He has said that doing these climbs simply makes him feel good, which makes him excited to be a part of the Sole 2 Soul for MPN™ trek team.
