Name:JAMIE SLATER
Age:40
Hometown:Brooklyn, NY
Reason for climbing:Project Living Proof Founder/Team LeaderIn 2013 I found a new love for kickboxing, lost 40 pounds, and began a new life dedicated to fitness and facing more challenges than I ever thought possible. I have several friends currently fighting various forms of cancer... some winning, and unfortunately some losing their battle. My best friend died of brain cancer when she was 20 years old. Every person in my family that has died, has died of cancer or cancer-related illnesses, and my father currently suffers from Alzheimer's Disease and is a two-time survivor of Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
I wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, but didn't want to do it for me, I wanted to do it for a reason much bigger than me.
So where to start?
I mentioned my idea in passing to Stan Wagner, a friend and coworker, a Multiple Myeloma patient and now member of what was to become Team Living Proof. He taught me about what having Multiple Myeloma means, inspired me and connected me with the wonderful people at the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation who immediately made me one of the family and are providing invaluable assistance and encouragement in making this journey possible.
Team Living Proof now consists of 12 people from all over the country who have been affected by this disease whether they are a patient, a doctor, or a family member of someone with Multiple Myeloma. We are all strangers coming together for an amazing cause, and soon to be a chosen family through the bonds of this life-changing experience.
