If you were to meet Dr. Sundar Jagannath in a crowded room (not that we have those anymore in the COVID-19 era), you would not assume that not only is he one of the greatest myeloma docs of all time, but he has directly and indirectly led to more remissions and cures for the disease than anyone can count.
Dr. Jagannath has had an impressive career from a research side but also from a patient care side. He currently heads the multiple myeloma center at Mount Sinai with othermyeloma specialists. He has influenced a generation of docs on how to best treat this disease and published more manuscripts than I can count, all while giving every patient his cell phone number to ensure they are never alone in this fight.
I have the pleasure of working with him and reading notes that say “Cured!”in a disease we are formally taught is incurable. His insights into how to change the gestalt of the fight from disease control to cure are going to be standard-of-care one dayin the generation of myeloma physicians following in his footsteps.
It is an absolute honor to work with him. I can think of no finer individual for this award. He truly embodies what it means to be a myeloma hero.
