Survivors Betsy Katz (far
right), Jana VanAntwerp (center), and Cindy Stephens say
they would never have met were it not for the six-week lecture
series on breast cancer they attended in Dallas after their
diagnoses in 2001. “None of us thought we needed or
wanted a support group,” says Katz. “But when
the lecture series was over, we decided to get together once
a week for dinner just to keep in touch, and it became so
much more.” The three woman helped each other through
treatment, hair loss, and reconstruction. Katz says they
started out at a chance meeting “and now we are friends
for life. We can’t imagine not knowing each other.” Photo

| Laura Nichter liked her mother Helen’s
bald head, so on their first trip out for pizza after chemotherapy,
she pulled off her mother’s hat and announced to the
restaurant, “Hey everyone! Look at my mommy’s bald
head.” “From that day on I would remove my hat
in public places. My daughter’s love and courage gave
me strength.” Photo by Helen’s husband Mark Nichter,
