  Olympic figure skater Scott Hamilton

By Melissa Weber

Olympic figure skater Scott Hamilton is stepping off the ice to let people know about a new website he helped create for cancer patients going through chemotherapy. The site‚ www.chemocare.com‚ includes detailed information about treatments and side effects along with survivor stories. Hamilton‚ a testicular cancer survivor‚ says‚ “Resources on the web are more along the lines of a medical journal and there are fewer web resources for the general public. What we’re trying to do with this site is take the mask off chemotherapy. This site gives survivors a platform and deputizes them in this effort to help eradicate cancer.”

Susan Sarandon will star in the TV movie Ice Bound based on the book by Jerri Nielsen‚ MD‚ a breast cancer survivor who wrote about having to treat her own cancer while isolated at the South Pole. The movie‚ which began filming in Canada in February 2003‚ will air on CBS.

Richard Crenna‚ actor of film and television‚ died January 17‚ 2003‚ of pancreatic cancer. The 76-year-old starred as Sylvester Stallone’s mentor in the Rambo films as well as The Flamingo Kid‚ Our Miss Brooks‚ and television’s The Real McCoys and Judging Amy.

Kevin MacMichael‚ guitarist and founding member of the 1980s rock band Cutting Crew‚ died Dec. 31‚ 2002‚ of lung cancer. The 51-year-old’s band‚ which received a Grammy nomination in 1987 for best new artist‚ is known for the hit single “(I Just) Died in Your Arms.”

The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation is celebrating life on June 1. For information on your local celebration or to organize an event in your area‚ e-mail ncsd@aol.com or go to www.ncsdf.org.
